In Scrum, an Impediment is anything that keeps the team from getting the job done. It slows velocity. Impediments can be in different forms. It could be a cold team room, lack of management support, a missing resource, or a sick team member. This is why it is crucial to resolve impediments during Daily Scrum as it blocks the team from doing their work.

1. Importance of Scrum Master: Impediment Remover

The Scrum Master is responsible for removing impediments. As a servant leader, the Scrum Master would guide the team towards cross-functionality and self-organization. Team members should be encouraged, supported, and empowered to reach their true potential. To achieve this, the Scrum Master has to make conscious decisions for removing impediments. The following tactics will help resolve obstacles.

2. Raise an Impediment Early On

Avoid waiting until the Daily Scrum for raising an impediment. There is no need to wait around until the Daily Scrum to pose a barrier. Instead, discuss obstacles regularly to resolve them.

3. Use Sprint Goals

Known for being a useful instrument for determining whether something is an impediment, a clear Sprint Goal is incredibly helpful. Anything that prevents teams from achieving the Sprint Goal is an impediment.

4. Understand the Difference between Impediments and Blocks

An impediment acts just like a parachute as it slows down the overall progress, while a block only affects a single task. Often, the team is capable of fixing blocks on their own, whereas, impediments require the Scrum Master to be resolved.

5. Use Impediment Board for Improving Transparency

It may be a simple flip-over in which the impediments would be visualized. Swimming lanes can be added such as “done, in progress, to do” and the status should be transparent for everyone. Besides, the impediments can be added to the existing Scrum Board. Through the visualization of the state, transparency would be increased.

6. Keep Track of the Fixed Impediments

By keeping track of the fixed impediments, significant input will be provided for the Sprint Retrospective and Sprint Review.

7. Understand the Organization

The Scrum Master has to understand the organizational culture and how things get done in the organization. By incorporating the right approach, even the most challenging impediments will be tackled easily.

8. Be Creative and Brave in Removing Impediments

When it comes to removing impediments, be prepared to ask for forgiveness after making bold decisions. Sometimes, it is important to make swift decisions to be productive.

9. Collaborate with the Product Owner

It is common for impediments to be related to product management. A healthy relationship with the Product Owner is based on collaboration is vital.

10. Stop Wasting Effort and Time in Solving the Wrong Problem

Failure to identify the right problems results in time and effort being wasted. Scrum Masters should focus on the real problem and not the first problem. They should ask questions to understand the situation better. It will help Scrum Masters to resolve impediments.
