How to Give Positive Feedback to a Colleague
by Amy Q.

Giving feedback is an essential component of team development in any company or working situation. This enables for an easy assessment of how effective your working relations are and the progress of the firm at large. Personal feedback is, however, individually oriented, and enables workers to be aware of how their actions impact the general goals of the company. For an efficient organization, negative feedback should be tolerated as much as positive impact. However, you should begin by identifying the primary goal of the feedback. You should then deliver the message in a way that meets the ultimate goal.

Below are some of the tips to facilitate this.

It should be an occasional event

The behavior of colleagues in a company directly influences the working environment. Providing consistent or regular negative feedbacks will encourage a deteriorating working scenario between your colleagues. Ensure therefore that you provide negative comments concerning a habit or a rare basis. Too much critique can lead to disengagement and a drop in performance.

Ask permission

It is important to seek an individual’s consent before engaging in critique. Being a colleague, you should respect his/her rights and freedom at work. Be prudent therefore and engage rightfully by asking permission before delivering the critique. It warns the person thus provides a better way of understanding the idea behind the comments.

Do not mix with pay and promotions discussions

Critical comments are best delivered on their own. Avoid excessively hurting an individual by delivering this critiques with other essential events such as pay rise and promotions. These are emotional events that when combined with critiques, interfere with the intended message.

Identify a suitable place to convey your message

As a colleague, you should know how best the person handles and reacts to such situations. Make a choice, therefore, depending on the anticipated reactions. If you have the guts, give the feedback in public. If the person reacts with embarrassment, offer the advice in private to avoid demoralization. However, note that it is not best providing any negative comments through emails.

Be willing to accept similar feedback too

Being a colleague, you should anticipate instances of similar comments by your other colleagues. As indicated before, critique is an essential tool to improve the performance of any venture or company. Therefore, as much as you offer such vital advice to other employees, be willing and ready for your piece of cake too.

Conclusion

Any feedback, be it positive or negative has an impact on the behavior of an individual. Positive comments aim at reinforcing a particular behavior while negative aims at criticizing a given action and provides an avenue for the desired change. In an organization, however, ensure that more of positive reinforcements are provided. Additionally, ensure that any comment delivered drives the individual towards realizing the ultimate goal of the message. This is hypothetically a collaborative method of assessing how best the tools and strategies of achieving the organizational goals are met.
