Scrum and Small Teams

Is Scrum feasible for small teams?

by Pete R.

One of the questions which, is often asked by developers or software companies is whether scrum is feasible for small teams. Now, to respond to this question, it is essential for you to understand what scrum actually is and what it can do for you.

Agile Technology

Scrum is a highly popular agile technology which provides teams with a framework to become more efficient and effective. There are many processes which an organization has to go through to implement Scrum.

Being an agile technology, Scrum focuses on change and how the team can use that change to improve itself such as by the use of retrospective.

Small Teams

Primarily, Scrum teaches teams to work in a group of 5 to 7 members, and it is advised for the team to stick to this number as it is the most effective. Grouping staff into small teams is considered one of the best practices of Scrum. Therefore, it is feasible for small groups.

Encourages Quick Communication

Due to the small size of teams, communication is rather quick and efficient. Everyone is supposed to provide their opinion on all the matters as scrum focuses on a collaborative effort rather than an individual effort.

Perfect for a Small Organization

Scrum is perfect for a small organization as small teams get to work together more effectively when they use Scrum. Also, it would be much easier to reorganize using scrum due to the relatively small size of the team.

Used for All Levels

One of the reasons why just about every project team uses scrum is since it can be used at all levels. You have a scrum of scrums which means a pyramid of scrum teams. Each team would focus on a specific feature or features depending on their tasks. The team would then elect a member or more who would represent the team to a broader audience.

Here are some things which anyone who is starting out with scrum should know:

  • Always start with the basics: Don’t start with any of the fancy software but rather focus on the basics in the beginning. Think about using marker boards, index cards and the like.
  • Follow all the rules of Scrum for first sprints: It is vital for you to follow all of the rules of Scrum when working on your first sprints. Once, you have worked on several sprints, you can make drastic changes only then.

Due to the following reasons, scrum is easy to use for small organizations which have small teams.

  • There isn’t much of a focus on control to change or command.
  • Allow for informal and easier discussions to take root between the product owner and the scrum team which allows for more details to be provided to ensure that the tasks are done well.
  • Small organizations do not have to bear reporting costs which makes it easier for them to apply Scrum.
