Who Is a Scrum Master?

In simple words, a Scrum Master is similar to a facilitator or coach of the Scrum team. According to the Scrum Guide, a Scrum Master is described as a person who is mainly responsible for supporting and promoting Scrum. A good Scrum Master is supposed to help everyone understand the theory of Scrum, its practices, rules, and values.

Skills of a Good Scrum Master

A Scrum Master requires the following skills and attributes to be successful at incorporating Scrum at the workplace.

Keeps Team on Track and Removes Barriers

The Scrum Master has to focus on keeping the team members on track and ensures that they reach their goals. Distractions would be discovered which block the team from delivering quality work and removed.

Encourages Collaboration and Shares Experiences

The Scrum Master observes the activities of team members daily. Experiences would be shared with the team members during meetings or conferences. The collaboration will be encouraged through planning sessions.

Introduces Engineering Practices

One of the attributes of the Scrum Master includes reducing efforts and time for the project developed by incorporating multi-level testing, simple designs, automated builds, and pair programming. The best practices should be introduced to help with the early completion of the project.

Excellent Communicator

Communication is vital, and the most critical skill and attribute of a Scrum Master. The ability helps by encouraging ideas to be discussed. It even allows messages to be delivered in a better way to customers, target audience, and team members.

Coaching for Team Development

There are different phases which every team undergoes when working as a team and a good Scrum Master understands this. The Scrum Master coaches the team members through the implementation of simple methodological rules.

Persistent and Flexible

Flexibility is something that a Scrum Master possesses to adopt change. To become Agile, it is a vital skill. Team members would be assisted to foster change. Both flexibility and persistence are essential for achieving goals.

Partnership with Product Owner

There are three roles of every Scrum project, which consist of Scrum Master, Scrum Team, and the Product Owner. The Product Owner pushes the team while the Scrum Master protects the unit. The Scrum Master creates a valuable relationship with the Product Owner through a partnership.

Dispensable and Wanted

The Scrum Master is both dispensable and wanted. The Scrum Master supports the growth of the team members. The team members get to work independently on the project but require advice from the Scrum Master from time to time.

Optimistic and Servant Leadership

Optimism helps improve the efficiency of the team and increases morale. Through the servant leadership, the Scrum Master motivates the team to do their best.

Empathy

The Scrum Master understands the emotions of team members and understands their feelings.
