Simple tips on how you can use Scrum on a side project

by Pete R.

More and more companies especially software companies have started to use Scrum to manage their projects. It is a highly, popular agile software which is actually a framework as it guides teams to proceed with their projects and all the tasks within that project. But what about a small side-projects?

Some people use Scrum for a side project like building a new server infrastructure for their company. Most companies who have just started using Scrum would not be able to fully utilize its features as it requires experience and knowledge to use the agile technology.

There are some great tips which will help to use scrum on a side project. Knowing these would make it easier for you to work on a side project and since, many new team members would lack the technical skills, hence, it is vital to follow these tips.

At the Core of Scrum

Now, you should always remember that at the core of Scrum, it focuses on delivering something to the production consistently. It also focuses on reflecting on what the team has done and on finding ways to improve the work. This is also referred to as retrospective.

Stick to the Basics

It isn’t necessary for you to follow all the artifacts, meetings and roles to take benefit of Scrum, but rather to stick to the basics. When you follow the basics, it will help you use the time more effectively. The focus should always be on delivering something to production regularly.

Valuable, Small & Achievable Goals

If you want to use Scrum on a side project efficiently, then it is vital for you to set important, small and achievable goals. It will help your team in achieving them, and the team members would not feel overwhelmed as that would only lead to them being unproductive.

Things You Need to Keep in Mind

Scrum has multiple uses, and a side project is one of them. If you genuinely want scrum to help you in this particular area then here are some of the most important questions which you should consider.

  • Is it possible to build a server running in production for the business in a week? If it is possible, then make sure to check if there is anything else which is more urgent.
  • How can we get running in production if a build server running in production can’t be done in a week which moves in the direction of getting a build server which others would find valuable?
  • If the above is also not possible then what can be done to get running somewhere which moves in the direction of getting a build server and would that result in uncertainty, difficulty, risk or just the unknown?

These should help you decide what needs to be done first in the week. Once, it has been done, you can focus on the side project and plan the work cycle as it will help you get something done.
